Every month
PhD Science Lunch
Once a month, one PhD student presents their project in 15 minutes, followed by questions and pizza. It’s a relaxed way to practise presenting, get feedback from people outside your field, and meet students from other groups. Master’s students and postdocs are welcome too.
When: monthly, usually Wednesday at 12:00
Where: Biozentrum, Science Lounge, 4th floor
Want to present? Write to the organisers and pick a month.
2–3 times a year
Career Lecture Series
We regularly invite people who built careers outside academia: journal editors, consultants, journalists and scientists in industry. They talk about how they got there, what the job looks like day to day, and its ups and downs.
When: 2–3 times a year
Where: Biozentrum, Science Lounge, 4th floor

Lunch Lottery
Want to meet people outside your own research group?
Sign up once, and every month we match you with one or two PhD students, postdocs or staff from other groups and departments. Meet for lunch or coffee, in person or online, whenever suits you both. Run together with the PhD reps of the Pharmazentrum, Biozentrum, DBM, FMI and D-BSSE.
How to join: email lunch-lottery@unibas.ch with your research group and whether you’d like one match or two.
Bonus: we raffle food vouchers from time to time.

All year round
Social events
Science is better when you know the people around you. Throughout the year we organise summer BBQs along the Rhine, billiard and game nights in winter, the PharmApéro at the Pharmazentrum, and of course, the staircase run at the Biozentrum.

Once a year
PhD Retreat
Every year since 2009, around 80 PhD students from both institutes spend two and a half days away together. Everyone presents their work, and there are keynote talks, plenty of time to talk, and a good dose of fun. Successful participation earns you 1 CP.
When: usually late summer
How to join: registration opens in spring, and all eligible students get the link by email.
